WHICH KINDS OF EARRINGS ARE AVAILABLE?

There are essentially three different kinds of earrings: studs, drops and hoops. But what sets a dangle earring apart? And what are ear climbers? We give you the lowdown and explain the differences between the most popular kinds of earrings:

Studs

Studs or stud earrings are the simplest and most popular kind of earring. They usually feature a bigger diamond. Diamond studs are suitable for every occasion and go with every style and outfit.

Cluster

Cluster earrings are available as studs and drops. They usually feature a bigger diamond at the centre, surrounded by several smaller ones. Alternatively, you can also find cluster earrings where several diamonds of the same size are arranged in a symmetrical pattern. Particularly special cluster earring designs feature several diamonds in different cuts.

Climber

Ear climbers (or crawlers) are studs that run upwards along the earlobe, hence the name – as they appear to climb or crawl along the ear. These are sure to catch the eye even in plain gold, unadorned by diamonds, and they’re bang on trend to boot.

Drop Earrings

Dangle Earrings

This term is used to describe earrings that hang from the ear. They come in various lengths, but they generally have one thing in common: they’re fixed with no moving parts. Some drop earrings are more like extended studs, which make them a blend of stud and drop varieties.

Classic hoops

Classic hoops are mostly simple gold hoop earrings, although some designs are also adorned with diamonds. They are usually round and form a circle reaching the back of the ear – although many other shapes are now available. These are a real staple of the jewellery world. The bigger the hoops, the more dramatic and striking they appear. One twist on the classic hoop is the C hoop. These do not close the circle, creating the effect of a letter C.

Huggies

Huggies are a twist on the hoop earring. While hoops only touch the earlobe at the piercing, huggies surround the earlobe. As the cute little name suggests, they seem to ‘hug’ the ear.

WHICH DIAMOND EARRINGS SHOULD I OPT FOR?

Unsure which type of earring to choose? As a rule, you should wear what you like and what makes you feel good. But if you’d like to highlight your best features with the right jewellery, we’ve put together a few tips for you:

FACE SHAPE

First, here’s the good news: simple studs suit everyone! So if you want to be on the safe side, you can’t go wrong with a pair of mandana studs.

We usually talk about four different face shapes: oval, round, square or heart-shaped.

  • Oval face: In an oval-shaped face, the cheekbones are the widest point. If your face is oval-shaped, you’re in luck! Almost every type of earring suits you wonderfully. But oval drop or dangle earrings are designed to suit you best.
  • Round face: On round faces, the cheekbones are once again the widest point. Unlike those with oval-shaped faces, however, people with round faces usually have chins and foreheads which are only a little narrower than their cheeks. The transition is smoother. If you have a round face, you should opt for long diamond earrings to make your face look longer. Dangle earrings are the best option. You should avoid big hoop earrings.
  • Square face: If your face is square, your cheeks, chin and forehead area are roughly the same width. Your forehead and jawline dominate. Delicate and flowing earrings are a great way to soften these shapes. Round and oval earrings and drop earrings will make the contours of your face look softer.
  • Heart-shaped face: A heart-shaped face is widest at the forehead and narrower at the chin. Your hairline usually forms a V-shape in the middle, too, making your face look like a heart. To make the lower, narrower part of your face look fuller, you can opt for long diamond earrings, like dangle earrings or big hoops.

HAIRSTYLE

Depending on how you wear your hair, of course, different earrings will better suit your look. The same rule applies here: studs are a safe bet! But if you wear long hair down, they’re hard to see and don’t make an impact. If you like wearing your hair down, we recommend pulling your hair away from your face. This shows off your earrings. For long hairstyles, you should take care when wearing long and delicate dangle earrings, for instance, as they can soon get caught up in your hair. Drop or dangle earrings are better suited to hairstyles where the hair is tied back, such as a bun or classic ponytail.

For short hair: the shorter the hair, the bolder your earrings can be! Huggies are perfect for short bobs. You can team big hoops or striking dangle earrings with a pixie or buzz cut with confidence. If you opt for studs, they can be a bit bolder, with more or bigger diamonds.

HAIR COLOUR AND COMPLEXION

Depending on your hair colour and complexion, certain colours of gold jewellery will suit you particularly well. The colours available in gold are usually yellow, white and rose gold. Yellow gold is closest to gold’s original colour. To make gold jewellery more resilient, copper and silver is usually added to the alloy. Silver or platinum are added to create a brighter, paler shade for white gold. Copper and silver are used to create the rose-coloured shimmer in rose gold. The more copper in the alloy, the redder it becomes.

  • Yellow gold: Diamond earrings in yellow gold particularly suit people with spring or autumn-type skin tones. Spring types usually have blonde or brown hair, often with a slight red shimmer. The complexion is light and warm. Gold earrings in yellow gold also particularly suit the autumn type, whose hair colour is warm and strong, like dark blonde and brunette. Autumn types have a warm skin tone that tans easily.
  • White gold: Gold earrings in white gold are perfect for the summer type. Summer types usually have a light and rosy complexion and cooler hair colours, such as silver or ash blonde. Winter types also suit gold earrings very well. They usually have dark hair and a very light complexion. A darker skin tone also suits diamond earrings in yellow gold.
  • Rose gold: Gold earrings in rose gold are particularly well-suited to autumn types. Rose gold is particularly flattering on a warm, golden complexion. However, diamond earrings in rose gold usually suit many types, as they are a little subtler than gold earrings, but a little bolder than white gold jewellery, too.
